TMJ Dysfunction/Orofacial Pain/Headaches

What Is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. We all have two of them as it is the joint that connects your jaw (mandible) to your skull (temporal bones). The temporomandibular joint is complex and unique in its structure.

We use the TMJ more frequently than any other joint in our body. Every time we chew, talk, bite down or swallow we put the TMJ to work. The exact cause of a person’s TMJ disorder (TMD) is often difficult to determine, which is why it’s important to receive the correct treatment plan

What are Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)?

When those that say “I have TMJ,” what they actually mean is that they have a problem with one or both of their TMJs, which is also called TMD.

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) are a complex and poorly understood set of conditions. TMD refers to problems related to pain, inflammation and improper functioning of: the joints themselves, the muscles surrounding and attaching to the joint, and/or associated structures around the head and neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, a TMJ disorder can lead to ear pain, ringing (tinnitus), dizziness, and a sensation of fullness in the ears. Since the jaw joint is located near the ear, any irritation or misalignment can affect hearing and balance. If these symptoms persist, a TMJ evaluation can help determine the best course of action.

Mild TMJ symptoms may improve with rest, stress management, and avoiding excessive jaw strain. However, ongoing pain, clicking, or difficulty chewing often require treatment to prevent further discomfort and joint damage. Early intervention can provide lasting relief and better jaw function.

Ignoring a TMJ disorder can lead to worsening pain, difficulty eating, frequent headaches, and long-term joint damage. Over time, it can also cause excessive tooth wear and muscle strain in the face, neck, and shoulders. Proper treatment can relieve symptoms and help prevent further complications.

Yes, stress can trigger jaw clenching and teeth grinding, which put extra strain on the TMJ and surrounding muscles. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, gentle jaw exercises, and a custom mouthguard (if needed) can help reduce tension and prevent worsening symptoms.

"Love this office’s excellent service!"

"We’d just moved to Billings for 2 months from Texas, and this dentist office is a God sent. EVERYONE is very warm and friendly. Jessica, the front desk lady who probably does everything is very helpful and welcoming; my hygienist, Kori, and Dr. Francis are just awesome! I like how they took real pictures of my teeth and doctor showed me the pictures and explained to me what’s going on with my gum and teeth in a way that I can understand. I’ve had several different dentists’ experiences in the last 40 years, they usually only showed me x-ray slides or images taken from their fancy new machine that all I could see were shadows of my teeth. Kori was very thorough and Dr. Francis was very clear in his explanations. Totally love this office’s excellent service!"

"I highly recommend their office"

Today was my first visit to see Dr. Francis and to also have my teeth cleaned by the dental hygienist. First, let me say that the dental hygienist had to have done the best job I’ve ever had done. Not only was she very friendly, but she explained everything as she did it, it was the most thorough cleaning I’ve ever had done. The icing on the cake was meeting Dr. Francis. He was extremely friendly. He explained the exam gave me all my options. All of the staff that I met were very friendly. The office was very clean. I highly recommend their office.

"They cared"

Wow! What Service. My own dentist of many years was not able to get me in for emergency service and didn't seem to really care. Dr. Francis got me into his office within the hour of my emergency and patched me up until I could get the permanent fix. His office staff was amazing and needless to say - they cared. This office will be getting all of my future dental business for myself and family. Thank you!
